Today, General Rick Hillier, Chief Defence Staff, got a measure of what the Kandahar deployment is up against. He was just finishing a meeting with some Afghan elders when a Canadian convoy approaching the village hit an IED just over the hill from where the CDS was. It blew the wheel off the Bison light armoured vehicle, but the crew was ok, which is exactly what these vehicles were designed to do. Of course the CDS's security team, likely players from JTF-2, got him out of there pronto. Later back at the Kandahar airbase he stated he was interested in seeing what our troops were up to and their challenges, so I guess he got a little of that today.
It was also interesting that Hillier made an unannounced visit to Pakistan the day before to get assurances from the government that they would hammer the Taliban and al-Qaeda on the Pakistan side if the Cdn. squeezed them from the Afghanistan side.
