i see in the paper today that the US state dept is concerned about how americans present themselves abroad. in hopes of killing off the ugly american stereotype they are it seems going to be including 16 tips for travellers. the ones listed in the article all would seem to be covered by "thou shalt not be a butthead" however.

We got that in Oz this morning. I liked the bit that says "...any form of boasting is considered very rude..." Funny how they think everything in Texas is bigger - when Texas is actually quite small. :) Cheers.

had a truckdriver from texas pulled in one day to get something fixed and we got to gassing a bit while it was being done. he was kinda chirpy fellow and he was horribly shocked to discover a goodly chunk of what he thought he knew was just plain wrong. i remember he was pretty much reduced to spluttering when i told him that texas was pretty good sized for a state as you'd only have to add say nevada and new mexico to it to make a province out of it. yeah i know it was cruel hehe but he was such a loudmouth i couldn't resist. when i told him the biggest cattle ranch in the world was in british columbia i thought the poor guy was going to stroke out on me. he literally couldn't conceive of anything anywhere being bigger than it was in texas. would have thought travelling about would have broadened his mind some rather than just his butt.

Very cruel Ehran, but very funny. I love watching a Yank's eyeballs grow to the size of dinner plates when we tell them we have cattle & sheep stations (ranches) bigger than Texas (actually they're not quite that big but Yanks will believe anything you tell them)! Cheers.

"when we tell them we have cattle & sheep stations (ranches) bigger than Texas"
well, Kidman owned cattle property that at one stage was approx 4-5 times the size of texas. ;) I remember having to stop over in Austin on the way to LA for a conference. I had this bloke wax lyrical about how everthing was bigger in Texas. So I pulled out the Qantas inflight magazine and showed him a map of australia - and then pointed to Western Australia. I then gently pointed out that 5 of the 6 mainland states were all bigger than Texas, and that one of the three mainland territories was also bigger. He was a nice bloke - but geographically he was in dreamworld.
