Subject: Jane's - Problems with lack of replacement aircraft
Griffin    10/2/2006 9:39:38 PM
Jane's Defence Weekly has an article outlining the problems the Canadian Air Force is facing due to a lack of aircraft, including the lack of the more recent or soon to be purchased aircraft. In part it reads: As for the four C-17 strategic airlifters, 16 CH-47 Chinook helicopters and 17 tactical transports that the air command is buying, "there is a serious recognition that the numbers of aircraft that we are procuring are all at the bottom end", said Lieutenant-General Steve Lucas, Chief of the Air Staff. "We have not included attrition aircraft in any of these purchases, so, if we do suffer losses, then we will examine the means of replacing the capability." Comments?

The big problem is that we don't produce military airplanes any more, so any spending will be sent to outside - not favored by any of 3 parties.

If we can make airplanes, the thing will be different - but uncle Sam doesn't like that idea.

I will say Canada still has a pretty big aerospace industry, we make parts for from C-17, A380 to F22 to JSF, yes we made them. But we can't make whole airplane.

And our federal government still spends huge money subsiding this industry, measured by billions, I won't go to detail about it. But they won't spend much for the CAF.

That's quite a ironic, but logical decison.
