Subject: USS Gunston Hall
BFD15    10/6/2006 2:44:46 PM
Read a story that the Canadian Forces are borrowing the USS Gunston Hall LSD-44 from the U.S navy to conduct some proof of concept exercises involving amphib assualt. Infantry with LAV's and G-wagons backed by Sea King helicopters will operate from the ship in two exercises. One will be in Nova Scotia and the other will take place next month in Camp Lejeune North Carolina. The destroyer HMCS Athabaskan, the frigate HMCS Halifax, the submarine HMCS Windsor, the supply ship HMCS Preserver and several coastal defence vessels will be involved in the exercise. An American destroyer will also take part in the war games. This is the first step towards Canada reaquiring this capability. If I was a betting person I would suggest Gen. Hillier's Big Honkin Ship will be an American ship, possibly one of the type represented by USS Gunston Hall. With a crew of only 350 people it would fit into Canada's capability.

BFD15, I concur on the 'big honkin ship', but wonder if he is talking just one step up from the JSS in the way of the LPD, (the JSS are IMHO are a huge waste of money), or if he is thinking big as in the new class of Amphibious Assault Ships, the LHA/R?  I'd bet they are talking LPD, which makes the building of the JSS all the more wasteful.  Had those $3.1-billion gone into LHA/R or even 3 LPD's, they would substantially increase the ability of the navy to operate and support our troops in littoral operations.

hey maybe if this works out well we could invade and annex the turks and caicos islands at long last.  their unprovoked aggressions have gone unanswered entirely too long ;)

How about getting back the sealift the CF once had so we don't have to rent ships like the GTS Katie and have our armaments held hostage to civil disputes.  Oh, I guess we could also add in our ability to properly support our troops in hostile littoral operations like in East Timor, Eritrea, the Balkans, etc. etc.

we had some aluminum ferries that didn't work out well as ferries but would have made decent logistical ships that the navy could have had for a song.
