Subject: Mr. Dion and the Liberals
Griffin    2/4/2008 11:12:02 PM
In our current minority government situation in Canada, and with the NDP and BLOC parties adamantly against the mission in Afghanistan, it is left to the Liberal Party Leader to work out something with the governing Conservative Party, or see the mission lose its Parliamentary support. I curious as to the thoughts of other CDN. here on this issue.

if we leave with the job unfinished then we've spent 78 lives on a fool's errand.  i'd like to see things in 'stan through to the end.  i don't know if it's possible to build a secular democratic state in 'stan but it's too early to throw in the towel and if we leave it's not like there is going to be any rush to take our place.

Interesting the twists and turns going on with a 2011 date being set for leaving Afghanistan by the conservative government, while Dion continues with the blantantly dishonest position that we want to only do functions other than combat like the PRT mission.  Unfortunately the facts tend to get in the way, since it was during a PRT mission that one of our Foreign Affairs personnel was killed in a suicide bomber attacker that severely wounded Paul Franklin.  Dion's position that if we only do non-combat missions there will be no combat and therefore no WIA/KIA. I'm surprised the government has not gone on a media blitz to lay out the truth.   In any event it looks like we're headed for an election soon - likely the budget - and the mission will on the 'menu' for debate during the election.

is permanent resident qualification enough to contibute to this? . i think posting a date on when to leave is taking the wrong attitude, and while i may be completely wrong with this, i feel the lads on ottawa are spending far too much time bickering over dates. i second ehran's thoughts that pulling out would be a waste of 72 [sorry if that's wrong] lives. further, it would be a waste of 72 lives that would also have liked to see success in afghanistan [i could be wrong, but i'll go with the assumption here]. i also think too much attention is being paid [by the public at large] to the reasons canada threw its weight into the equation. the way i feel is, they're there, they're gaining ground/experience/technique for this particular theatre/etc. lets focus more on how to make the most of their utility. you made an interesting point about dion's position with a more non-combatant role, and while we can agree it is also important to work on a political and economical level, he [ad others] need to understand that these kind of works don't get anywhere without security and within an unstable environment. having typed all the above, i've just realised i've put down everything we all know/think already. oh well, i shall post it anyway [if not just to keep this thread at the top of the canada board]
