Subject: Legalizing marijuana. -Economic strategy

Should Canada legalize marijuana? My opinion is yes. It is less dangerous than alcohol and even if it has ten times the tar as cigarettes you wouldn't smoke a whole pack a day. (I hope.) I personally don't smoke it and would be unlikely to should it be legalized, but it seems highly hypocritical to have both cigarettes and alcohol be legal and yet have something that produces the same basic effect that is cheaper to produce be illegal. Canada could definately use the income from increased taxation and tourism that this would generate, as well as the increase in capacity to produce paper products and clothing and so forth. (I have a shirt made out of hemp fibre, it is like cotton only about a hundred times stronger.) Maybe then we could bump our military up a bit.

the ethical stand for marijuana being illegal is suspect at best. legalizing it could have some interesting implications. for instance could we sue the americans under NAFTA for unduly restricting canadian exports of marijuana into the US using non tarrif barriers? the possibilities are endless hehe.

Want to be careful though. Would need to be accompanied by a huge public health program highlighting the increased risk of mental health problems.

I am for making it legal to have small amounts for personal use. From time to time in the past I have been known to enjoy the odd rocket in a social setting and I didn't find it much different than drinking, only faster. My only concern with legalizing it is the lack of a proper roadside test for police use at Ride checks. We are making great headway with drinking and driving and it would be a shame to slide backwords with toking and driving. If it is legalized buy stock in munchies corporations.

To my way of thinking we should legalize it in any amount (basically make them like cigarettes, which I would ILLEGALIZE by the way). If they are legalized there will be no point in stockpiling large quantities of them. BUT, we have to keep in mind that our neighbours to the south are less lenient on this type of thing. Thus, we should pay to have drug sniffing dogs present at all outgoing border locations to help make sure it stays in the country. Marijuana is pretty easy to smell on clothing, I think that the toking and driving would be a possibility if we made it legal for police officers to.. I am not sure what would be the correct procedure to apply, but basically investigate the person further based on an incriminating smell. We use that kind of info from dogs all the time, if a human can smell it why not use that.
