my personal favourite anecdote is about the canadian btn sent to hong kong to reinforce the garrison just before the japs attacked. the british were forced back onto the island of hong kong which the japs launched an impromptu amphib landing on. the canadians were green as grass with this disaster being their first and only combat experience. at the end they were reduced to defending their positions with captured jap rifles as they were almost out of their own ammo. the situation was hopeless so what they decided to do of course was to do a night attack on the japs with the intent of piercing the jap line and seizing some landing boats. that done they were to cross the harbour and land on the mainland where they would do as much damage as they could to the jap logistics train while heading inland. the ultimate plan was to join up with units of chiang's forces who were supposed to be operating further inland. they were however ordered to surrender by a british officer before they got a chance to make their play. i expect that had they known what would happen to them as jap pow they would have told the brit where to get off and gone ahead with the planned attack.
