the gov't announced a new infantry brigade would be formed. so far it's been nothing but press releases on the subject with 0 action. god knows we could use several more btn's active duty guys given the demands for canadian peacekeepers etc.

if i hear anything i'll post it with two provisos. first i'm not all that well connected nowadays and second given the current events up here this is probably a long way from being front burner material. ottawa is a real mess right now and it probably won't change till near the end of the year.

Our minority government nearly collapsed due to corruption in the Liberal party. (Roughly equivelant to US democrats, only much much slimier IMHO.) If you want tons of info, just hit google and look up "gomery inquiry". That will get you started.

it goes back to the previous government in which the current pm was the finance minister. the federal government had a slush fund to promote the federal government in quebec in various ways like supporting cultural and sporting events etc after the last independance referendum. trouble was they weren't supervised in how the money got spent and it seems there was a serious culture of "it's our money to do with as we please". bunch of money went to various advertising firms with strong connections to the liberals for work never done etc and now it's coming out that some of that money made it back into the coffers of the liberal party. course everyone involved seems to have a bad case of sgt schultz syndrome. the funny thing is the conservative party is still so distrusted by canadians at large over their assorted shenanigans that they are a dozen points back in the polls and if an election was called today it's rather doubtful they could hold onto the seats they already have. there are also a couple mp's who are trying to exploit the current weakness of the lib minority gov't to promote their favourite issues. the considerable majority of canadians don't want an election till after the gomery commission issues it's final report which is supposed to be the end of the year.
