Subject: Class Mobility

saw in the paper a chap just released a book where he looked at social mobility in various western countries. to my surprise canada, finland and i think denmark placed at the top of the list with the US, france and the UK at the bottom of the list with sweden and someone else in the middle. funny how the "socialist" countries seem to have the most freedom along those lines while the rabid free enterpriser types are at the bottom of the list.

Ehran, that sounds like an interesting read - do you have a source or the name of the book? I have looked at inequality gaps and I know that socialist countries have more narrow gaps than the US...but social mobility I always thought would naturally be greater in a more capitalist society. Of course, in the case of the US, to succeed more and more takes a college degree - college costs continue to rise - presto, opportunity is reduced. Anyway, any info you could provide would be most appreciated.

I was kind of surprised when I heard that too, but then I realized that the more socialist nations typically have better funding for education. My entire univ education in terms of student fees and so on ran to about 20 grand Canadian. In the US I think it's not uncommon to pay triple that, and good luck attending one of the ivy leagues.

education being expensive isn't going to help the process along as that's the road up for most of those that make it up.
