seems scientists found a set of bare foot prints crossing an ashbed on a mexican volcano dating back 40000 years around triple the commonly accepted span.

spread all over north and south america at a guess. saw interesting article years ago on a woman found a "lost" city down at the southern tip of south america. a big city with tens of thousands of inhabitants she figured. she was on her own with no resources but she took some samples and sent them off to be dated. came back circa many thousands of years before humans were supposed to be in alaska much less tierra del fuego. had them tested 3 times before she decided the tests were ok. went off and presented a paper at a conference and was essentially blackballed for upsetting the applecart. a sad case.

The story of Margeret Mead springs to mind: She jotted down the fantasies of teenage Samoan girls - and presented them as a scientific investigation and the truth about sexual mores in that part of the world - "Coming of age in Samoa." The problem was not that it was nonsense; but Margeret Mead went on to become the doyen of anthropology and any attempt to correct the fabrication was nibbed in the bud!
