I know the Mexican Army has mostly internal security responsibilities, but does Mexico have any type of force projection capability to deploy forces outside of Mexico?

I have no doubt and I was not intimating any sort of US invasion. I don't read alot about the Mexican military in the press except for the Zapatista problems. Has Mexico ever discussed deploying troops in a UN peacekeeping mission or something along those lines?

The question is does the US have the resources to stem the continuing Mexican invasion ?

I have to agree with X-Man on this one regarding immigration. I have my own ideas about illegal immigration, but the original question concerned the Mexican military being deployed overseas, which has nothing to do with individual Mexican citizens illegally crossing the border into the United States. The Mexican military has indeed dedicated itself almost entirely to internal security and guarding the Guatemalan border (with whom Mexico is on pretty good terms), but I feel that Mexico has missed an excellent opportunity to do its part to improve its status on the world stage. Mexico has a number of special operations units in each branch of the Mexican military. From what I have read the Mexican Army special forces (GAFE) appear to be a highly capable force that have received extensive training in fighting in jungles, swamps, desert, and mountainous terrains. They have worked with special forces troops from the United States, Brazil, and Guatemala (Kaibil), and I feel that they would hold their own in conflicts overseas, especially in places like Afghanistan. Apparently this is not to be. I don't know much about how Mexican society feels about the subject of deploying Mexican troops overseas, but I doubt that the leftist politicians in Mexico (which hold a lot of influence in Mexico) would tolerate such a move. For the time being it appears that the only Mexican soldiers that will be fighting overseas will be wearing the uniforms of the United States military. Americans of Mexican descent (as well as Mexican-born citizens) have served the US military with distinction and will continue to do so for some time to come. Personal note to X-MAN: I have been looking for books on the modern Mexican military for a book project I have been working on but have come up empty handed. I would appreciate any assistance. Language is not a problem. I can speak and read Spanish, but it is not quite as good as your English. I have to prod you just a little bit, however. Do you really think that the Mexican military could defend against an American invasion ;).

Fair enough, X-Man. I won't tease you any more, but I think you should read the book "Trail by Fire" by Harold Coyle (he also wrote the book "Team Yankee"). It is a novel about a US military incursion into Mexico. In the book the Mexican Army aquits itself quite well despite being faced with M-1s and Bradleys. One of the big heroes of the book is a Mexican Army colonel. The book really changed my view of the Mexican military. I am looking mostly for information on Mexican military ground forces. I was at first mostly interested in the Army, but it wasn't until I looked at the links you provided did I realize that both the Navy and Air Force have their own infantry troops. Are there any books that you know of that cover this? Again, language is not a (big) problem. I am also interested in the uniforms and small arms used by Mexican grunts. I have been on SEDENA's web site, but other than saying that Mexico makes the G3 rifle and MP5 under license it doesn't get into specifics. I assumed that Mexico might adopt the HK G36 rifle, but on one of the web sites you provided I saw that some elite troops are using a couple of different versions of the M-16. That's what I get for assuming. You make some valid points regarding the Mexican governments attitude regarding defense. The only response I have to that is to point out that a lot of Mexicans and Americans of Mexican descent were killed on 9/11. If the people that did this are not enemies of Mexico, then who is? 9/11 taught us that people who hate us (and that includes Mexicans) will travel halfway around the world to do us harm. We need to take the war to them and prove to them that we will not be passive and let them kill us without a fight. I'll get off my soap box. Anyway, if anybody can point me in the right direction I would appreciate the help. P.S.------The plot of my book project involves a conflict in southern Mexico with a rebel group similar to FARC in Colombia. I feel that the Mexican military got a bum deal in Chiapas and was not allowed to win. In my project the Mexican military are definitely the good guys.

The Mexican Special Forces are probably badass because of the they have 2 choices: 1.- Get Badass or 2.- Get beaten by metal rods while they sleep. Let me tell you a little story that a friend who was in the mexican military told me: He signed in the Naval Academy with hopes of becoming an officer in the Naval Infantry. So one morning, they were having breakfast in the mess hall and the guy sitting next to him asked if he could have more eggs. So, the CO after hearing this, approached him and asked him "Que paso, le gustan los huevitos?"(What's the matter, you like eggs?) To which he made the mistake of answering "Well, Yes sir" So the CO said "Oh, so you do? Then bring this motherf****r 15 eggs and he will eat ALL of them while I watch". He had no choice but to start diggin in. When he was half way through, The CO asked my friend if he as also liked eggs, my friend said " No sir, I do not" to which the CO responded "Oh,is that so? Then bring this bastard 15 eggs and he will eat them until he loves them". My friend has never touched eggs since then. Anyway, I hear the russian military makes the Spetsnaz empty their stomachs with their own fingers after lunch. They'll ask something like "Would his majesty like to empty his stomach in my presence?" or "Stomach inspection, Ambassador" or sometimes they're less eloquent and simply start kicking you until it comes out.

Since X-MAN got bounced from the site, can anyone else tell me if there are any books out there about the modern Mexican military? Hey Rebanonjin, does your buddy know of any? It doesn't have to be in English. I have searched Amazon and every place I can think of, but the only books about the Mexican Army are either leftist rags whining about human rights abuses or books about the Mexican-American War. Any help would be appreciated.

There are some of us who know that deployment of our troops to international excersices or peace keeping missions under UN mandate would actually be a very positive experience for our military (Who is very enthusiastic about the idea)... but leftist (pseudo socialist in the "revolutionary parties") have continually prevented this form happening... Navy secretary Antonio Peyrot was repremended by a group of congressmen from de PRI and PRD parties two years ago for allowing a single frigate (Knox class) to participate in the UNITAS 2002 exercise. Mexican armed forces are undergoing a peroiod of modernization... Mexican Army GAFEs are to recieve 8 CH-53 Yassur 2000 to compliment the 6 UH-60 they operate... Mi-17 have been a BIG dissapointment for the Army and are now being taken out of service. Both the Mexican Amry and Navy have CAR-15s in their inventories, but the Army only operates them in small numbers, Mexico will undertake production of the G-36 shortly. Mexico does deploy troops to other countries but only for humanitarian support... the means to do this come in the form of B-727's and C-130's. I don't want to bore you guys, if you ask me specific questions I'll be more than happy to answer them. PZThunderbolt... From México and a stone throw away from El Paso, TX.

Warning: before anybody starts asking about detailed information on the Mexican Army/ military forces in Mexico. know whom you are talking to and donot approach a bookstore clerk or someunknown person who is not familiar with American's or you. They can easily arrest you as a spy down there! Please to Remember That Mexico is not the United States!
