Subject: WP: US admits human rights shortcomings in UN report
YelliChink    8/25/2010 10:52:40 AM
http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2010/08/23/AR2010082303880.html By MATTHEW LEE The Associated Press Monday, August 23, 2010; 6:16 PM WASHINGTON -- The Obama administration has told the United Nations that America's human rights record is less than perfect but stressed that the U.S. political system has built-in safeguards that promote improvements. The American Civil Liberties Union praised the administration for engaging with the council but said the report neglected to address key areas where the U.S. has not met its human rights obligations. Those areas include inhumane prison conditions, racial disparities in death penalty cases, and abuses in the immigration detention system. "It is time for the U.S. to match its human rights rhetoric with concrete domestic policies and actions and create a human rights culture and infrastructure that promote American values of equality and justice for all," said Jamil Dakwar, director of the ACLU's human rights program. ================================================== OK, WTF?

The 29-page report is the first to be submitted by the United States this week to the U.N. Human Rights Council and will be the basis of a human rights audit that U.S. representatives will take part in later this year.

The report — which addresses America's history of slavery, discrimination against women, ethnic minorities and gays — sounds in parts like political campaign literature.

For example, in a section about equality for people with disabilities the report states, "President Obama further demonstrated the nation's commitment to continued vigilance and improvement by announcing new regulations that increase accessibility in a variety of contexts and commit the federal government to hiring more persons with disabilities."

Want to bet that the report will come out just before elections and blaim the Presidents Bush, the Tea Party, and the Republican Party for everything?

I would agree about the US' needing to improve its human rights record if the fact that US citizens finance drug cartels through their abuse of controlled substances.
But Obama clearly is not going to expose his own political base to the censure of the UN.

So he has to resort to fairy tales.
