Subject: Is this the reason for the internet kill switch
norden    1/28/2011 9:16:03 PM
One of Egypts first moves was to kill internet and cell phones. I wonder if this is reason we are trying to implement the "kill switch" here. IMO if we never needed it before why do they feel they need it now and if they do then shouldnt we be worried?

That is a good question here but the internet is too centralized and ours isn't firewalled or domained all under .us.   Plus, if some Ham guys, faxes, and old POTS lines are getting around all of that blockage in Egypt (the old text internet still exists and you can run any website like twitter pretty easily off of text commands), how many techno wizzes would bypass such a switch here?

1. All old POTS lines going out of the US.
2. Lots of old fax machines
3. Still lots of dial up modems
4. Line command UNIX systems.
5. Disobedient telecom and portal employees
6. Satellite TV systems!  Especially when your techy friends in France and other countries send you the uplink data to jack into commercial birds.
7.  Data over HAM, lots of people could do that here.
8. Physically tapping into backbone sites

Our gov't conveniently ignores that fact that any move towards "locking down" the US in any situation short of massive natural disaster or invasion would split the army and every LEO department in the country.

Comments on this site include the employment of cell phones in some countries.
