http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/worldnews/wikileaks/8304654/WikiLeaks-cables-US-agrees-to-tell-Russia-Britains-nuclear-secrets.html# quoted: **************************************************************** Wikileaks WikiLeaks cables: US agrees to tell Russia Britain's nuclear secrets The US secretly agreed to give the Russians sensitive information on Britain’s nuclear deterrent to persuade them to sign a key treaty, The Daily Telegraph can disclose. -------------------------------------------------------- By Matthew Moore, Gordon Rayner and Christopher Hope 9:25PM GMT 04 Feb 2011 Information about every Trident missile the US supplies to Britain will be given to Russia as part of an arms control deal signed by President Barack Obama next week. Defence analysts claim the agreement risks undermining Britain’s policy of refusing to confirm the exact size of its nuclear arsenal. The fact that the Americans used British nuclear secrets as a bargaining chip also sheds new light on the so-called “special relationship”, which is shown often to be a one-sided affair by US diplomatic communications obtained by the WikiLeaks website. Details of the behind-the-scenes talks are contained in more than 1,400 US embassy cables published to date by the Telegraph, including almost 800 sent from the London Embassy, which are published online today. The documents also show that: • America spied on Foreign Office ministers by gathering gossip on their private lives and professional relationships. • Intelligence-sharing arrangements with the US became strained after the controversy over Binyam Mohamed, the former Guantánamo Bay detainee who sued the Government over his alleged torture. • David Miliband disowned the Duchess of York by saying she could not “be controlled” after she made an undercover TV documentary. • Tens of millions of pounds of overseas aid was stolen and spent on plasma televisions and luxury goods by corrupt regimes. A series of classified messages sent to Washington by US negotiators show how information on Britain’s nuclear capability was crucial to securing Russia’s support for the “New START” deal. Although the treaty was not supposed to have any impact on Britain, the leaked cables show that Russia used the talks to demand more information about the UK’s Trident missiles, which are manufactured and maintained in the US. Washington lobbied London in 2009 for permission to supply Moscow with detailed data about the performance of UK missiles. The UK refused, but the US agreed to hand over the serial numbers of Trident missiles it transfers to Britain. Professor Malcolm Chalmers said: “This appears to be significant because while the UK has announced how many missiles it possesses, there has been no way for the Russians to verify this. Over time, the unique identifiers will provide them with another data point to gauge the size of the British arsenal.” Duncan Lennox, editor of Jane’s Strategic Weapons Systems, said: “They want to find out whether Britain has more missiles than we say we have, and having the unique identifiers might help them.” While the US and Russia have long permitted inspections of each other’s nuclear weapons, Britain has sought to maintain some secrecy to compensate for the relatively small size of its arsenal. William Hague, the Foreign Secretary, last year disclosed that “up to 160” warheads are operational at any one time, but did not confirm the number of missiles. ------------------------------------------------------------------- There you go, Ladies and gentlemen! Our heroes, the US State Department and the people who are in the Chicago Thug's administration. Maybe this is the proof we need to truly classify this administration as the worst ever? H.

Not until they loose Egypt to Muslim Brotherhood of Nod.

But at least the UK government can repent and un-ban Michael Savage.

JTR~~    truly disgusting   2/11/2011 2:35:10 PM

Just another betrayal from the so called "special relationship" which is so obviously one sided and geared towards US government interests. Don?t get me wrong here i am not anti US, i am however anti US government, or to be more specific against the way in which they treat their so called allies and other nations in general with their sham of a foreign policy. The US government will seemingly lie in bed with anyone and pretend to be the closest of friends with them, that is all the while you have something they want. Then when they are done they will drop you by the way side. It is the way in which the US government treats its power is disgusting. They act as if they are the better of everyone else, i mean selling confidential UK secrets? That?s no measure of respect and only serves to further illustrate me point. They only ever look out for number one, they play the world as a game and we are the mere pawns, and yet the try to pretend to the world as if they are this defender of peace figure who appreciates the solid relationships with their allies. But yet as illustrated by this they would soon sell us out if they thought they could get something of it. The US government only acts in the interest of trying to fuel their world power. No wonder there is so much ill feeling over here.

Yes i will admit that the ill feeling can sometimes be wrongly aimed by us Brits at the American people in general when really they are by no means at fault. from what i can discern the people of America very much value the supposed "special relationship" between us the US and that often they are disgusted with the way in which the US government can be seen to treat our nation. They treat us as their poodle and we foolishly act as such. It is not the US we dislike, it is the government due to the years of mistreatment they we have seen under successive US administrations (some worse than others, i would refer to the BP incident and the way in which Obama made little hesitation in displaying his blatant anti British rhetoric). if the US government continues to treat it?s so called friends in such a way, i can tell you now it will not have many friends left.

Finally i would like to add, while there may be no special relationship between our governments, Washington has made that very clear indeed. a true special relationship will always last between the two peoples of our nations (cousins across the pond as we are and over here your friendship as a people is very much valued in return)

God save Great Britain

Considering that the UK is revamping its nuclear service and that there are more Russian spies in the UK than all of the US, I doubt there are that many real secrets.

And its fascinating to think that US right wingers believe that conservative US presidents consult with allies while liberal US presidents don't.

As an America I'm ashamed of Barry Obama's treatment of the UK from day he moved into the White House. He removed the bust of Winston Churchill, a leader who helped save the world from the Nazis. He expressed neutrality when Argentina made noises about the Falkland Islands, which are sovereign British territory. The he asks the UK for permission to give UK nuclear data to Russia. When the UK said no, he did it anyway. Meanwhile over 300 British troops have died in Afghanistan, more than any other nation after the US. He said France has been our closest ally(!), ignorant of the fact that French troops fired on Americans in North Africa and southern France during WW2. I sincerely hope David Cameron has the b...s to reward Barry for his lack of  respect for the special relationship between our two nations.
