Protesters appear to have gained a foothold in Tripoli as banks and government buildings were looted while demonstrators have claimed they have taken control of the second city Benghazi. It is thought up to 400 people may have died in the unrest with dozens more reported killed in Tripoli overnight as protests reached the capital for the first time and army units were said to have defected to the opposition. As Europe and the U.S. condemned the regime's handling of the unrest, Gaddafi's son Saif said his family would 'fight until the last bullet'. More than 300 victims were massacred – many by foreign mercenaries – during the government crackdown in Libya’s second city, Benghazi. Protesters were gunned down in the streets, with reports that helicopter gunships and snipers were used to suppress the uprising. Different countries, different situation.

Pakistan is never a insane Islamic state like Iran, and the internal politics there is very complicated. In Karachi things are quite liberal while in some back country cities the culture is more Islamic conservative. The military and the major political parties are all more secular than the BJP of their neighboring country.

Saudi Arabia have become an Islamic Kingdom since failed 1979 revolution. Unlike the Shah of Iran, the Saud Royal House never worked against the Islamic tradition in Arabia and maintained good relation with religious leaders. Although the revolution failed, the Sauds turned to the racical Wahhabism for the people, while they themselves enjoy very perverted life style, yes, even by Western standards.

On the other hand, the collapse of Gaddafi is actually against the Western interest. Not that the old Gaddafi is any favorable than Mubarak, but his son is better leader for Lybia. People in the West forgot how Turkey became and maintained as a modern state before AKP took over. The iron hands of the Turkish military and Kemalists. Ataturk is certainly not more amicable than Mubarak or Gaddafi.

Lybia affects the EU oil/gas market, Col. Qaddafi's supporters, Eni and Total, are fleeing the country with the rotors on the rigs still turning.

I know you guys don't dig on Al Jazeera, but their coverage has been brilliant and just now several senior Lybian air force officers have landed on Malta in their jets and some attack helicopters.  These officers defected after refusing orders to bomb and strafe protesters in the urban areas.

Which also means that rumors of air strikes on protesters may be coming true.

The Paks are bat-manure insane, by any standard of a reasonable benchmark. Take a look at this:

Yeah that's true that there are a lot of crazy people in Pakistan. After all, inbreeding brings way higher probability of mental
disorder, but not to the degree that you see around Berkeley.

Very typical comment for you Yelli, islam-o-facists in every bush and working at every convenience store.  Where is Bill O to save us!

Btw, religious extremism is a right wingy attribute, no matter which religion.

Btw, religious totalitarian anti-individualist freedom extremism is a right wingy sociopathic attribute, no matter which religion odeology (espouses it).

Crazies are rigid  ideologues who cling to their falsified principles. When you cannot change your mind when the data does not fit your concept of realty, you are by a good working definition, crazy. Sane people change their mnds when they are wrong. The reality is not wrong, just their understanding of that reality. Since wrong people cannot change reality, the sane ones change what theu can, themselves.

Most Christians have changed, Nan. The moslem crazies (fascist bastards, most of the extremists you see.) and even the so-called moslem moderates have not and are still insane.

And Nan....right-wing crazies?

Note that Lara  Logan by any reasonable standard is something of a very heroic individual.  Her bio reads like a modern female version of Ernie Pyle. (who was quite liberal in a conservative way.).

Still dislike her politics, but I like her immensely. She has shown that she can change her mind.

Cleric orders Gaddafi killed

Cleric orders Gaddafi killed

Influential Muslim cleric Yusuf al-Qaradawi has issued a fatwa that any Libyan soldier who can shoot dead embattled leader Muammar Gaddafi should do so 'to rid Libya of him.'

'Whoever in the Libyan army is able to shoot a bullet at Mr Gaddafi should do so,' Qaradawi, an Egyptian-born cleric who is usually based in Qatar, told Al-Jazeera television.

He also told Libyan soldiers 'not to obey orders to strike at your own people,' and urged Libyan ambassadors around the world to dissociate themselves from Gaddafi's regime.

Famous in the Middle East for his at times controversial fatwas, or religious edicts, the octogenarian Qaradawi has celebrity status in the Arab world thanks to his religious broadcasts on Al-Jazeera.

He has in the past defended 'violence carried out by certain Muslims.'

The West accuses the cleric of supporting 'terrorism' because he sanctioned Palestinian suicide attacks in Israel. Britain and the United States have refused to grant him entry visas.

The cleric, spiritual leader of Egypt's Muslim Brotherhood and longtime resident of Qatar, heads the International Union for Muslim Scholars

I'm not sure that Libya would go the way Egypt would. The population is much smaller and the country is relatively rich, and would have been richer had Gaddafi didn't waste money on wars and terrorism.
It is likely that a new "people's" government will be formed soon in Benghazi and the country would go into a rapid civil war before Gaddafi runs out of money and loyalists. Then we will see how Islamists do in Libya.
