Subject: Fear Of US Military Revolt?

Why would Panetta's visit require Marines to be disarmed?

PRUDEN: A curious experiment in gun control in Afghanistan

"The Taliban position on peace is clear and unchanging; it would behead Americans wherever it found them. So much for diplomacy. Mr. Panetta is back in Washington, the brave experiment with gun control is over and their weapons were returned to the Marines. It’s not yet clear if the bullets were returned, too."

One of the reasons for which I object to the order to assassinate Bin Ladin instead of capturing him is that it degrades our highly professional special ops people to the level of hit men.

If our political leaders persist in this, one day some of them may find themselves on the receiving end. We shouldn't want that.

It would be much better to use our SOCOM people for higher purposes than that.

You're right of course. Everyone knows our military is really supposed to be the world's cops, so we should have arrested him instead of killing him.

Arresting Bin Laden and transporting him to the United States (or at least Gitmo) for trial probably would have been more trouble than it was worth.  Bin Laden would have turned the whole procedure into a circus, and there would have been no shortage of high powered attorneys that would have volunteered to represent him.  The trial would have went on for years and would have been a political liability for Obama and the Democrats.  Right or wrong, I'm sure that had to play a role in the decision as to whether or not to capture Bin Laden alive.
