Subject: Part destroyer, part Carrier, part Jewish...

Subject: Israeli aircraft carrier II Ezekiel 6/28/2005 11:23:01 PM An Israeli aircraft carrier is a definite possibility in the future of a ever growing indigenous arms complex.... what do you think? what would it entail? I really don't think that Isreal could afford, or even really use an aircraft carrier. Not even something the size and scale of the British Invinvible class would really be in reach of their limited budget. But what about a large helicopter carrying destroyer, like the French Jean D'arc or the old Italian Andrea Doria Class ships? Such a ship would have a forward section reminiscent of a conventional destroyer or frigate, with an enlarged hangar and flight deck on the rear. The first aviation destroyers were not really known as quality ships, They were overcomplicated, out of balance, and rather ugly. But I think the advent of VLS launchers, flat panel array radars, and modular design could help the Isrealis keep thier version modestly simplistic and reliable. Such a ship would have enough hanger space for about four to ten helicopters (depending on what mix)and a large landing deck on the back. I imagine a typical air arm of four ASW/SAR helicopters. (Such as Seahawks or Sea kings) four scout/attack helicopters. ( SeaCobras. ) The ASW helos can prosecute attacks on hostile subs and rescue downed aviators. Depending on type, this kind of attack helicopter may also be able to carry Small to medium sized Anti ship missiles, allowing the ships air arm to prosecute attacks on hostile destroyers and frigates. The attack helos will be used to prosecute attacks on fast surface targets (Missile boats, weapons smugglers) and to find targets for the Isrealis own missile boats. Without its air arm, the ship can serve as a mobile filling station for heliborne commando and attack raids, extending the range at which Isrealis can insert special teams into hostile terrain. I envision two of these ships, possibly three, weighing in at less then 12000 tons. Any suggestions or critiques are welcome.

A aircraft carrier of Cavour class able to carry F35 cost 900 m€.Developoing a ship like you mentioned would cost close to this price.
Do you think, BTW, that limited Israeli budget could be wasted in acquiring a blue sea navy?
what you could do at max is acquiring 2/3 polyvalent frigates like spanish F100 at a Cavour class ship.Cost about 3 B$.
But for what? To bomb Iran with 30 F35?
What Israel has think is to get some cheap DDX ships to supplement Israel capacity in case of massive attack on Israeli airfields. Then these ships could launch SRBM with clsuter warheads of single penetrating warheads to halt an attack on Israel the time Israeli air force redeploy and repair airfields.
An other task would be a surprised attack on a power like Iran combined with air force.
Imagine a stealthy cruiser with F100 capacities (AEGIS and VLS but with Arrow maybe inside) supplemented by a 127 mm in a stealty turret and able to carry 2 to 4 helos. And carrying 32/48  SRBM with 1200 km range and a 1 ton payload with either 20 antitrack /airshelther submunitions, or a single penetrating warhead, or 1000 submunitions, or 100 antitank/antiaircraft(on airfileds) submuntions .
That would make more sense.

I'm shocked to find myself agreing with French Stratege, but Israel's strategic problem is homeland defence, not power projection...

I agree.  with all of israel's defense concerns (terrorism, air/missile defense, keeping land army top notch) throwing money at a power projection tool wouldnt make much sense.  good frigates and a few subs are just about all that is needed for them in the water to conduct the type of sea war they would likely be involved with against nearby countries ( sink tankers, protect against piracy, ect. )

..........to go with your excellent army. Roadmobile TELs for IRBMs are tough to do but those make more sense than any baby DD(X). Those ships are EXPENSIVE and do not give Israel what she needs which she obtains in her IRBMs, which is decisive deterence.

Dominance over the arabs in the eastern Mediterranean and the Red Sea is obtained with airpower and naval patrollers . For that you need good powerful missile boats, subbmarines, and that air force.

As usual, its the naval mission defines what you need navally, not the overactive imagination.
