She should move to America. Yeah, we've got "fairground freaks" and "sheep-murdering barbarians" too, but it's not illegal to say so.

I gotta kick outta this. What has happened to the French Republic? Are they abandoning the traditional liberal philosophy that much of the West is predicated on or what? What I don't get is that a French author can write that 9/11 was staged by big oil and most Americans are worthless clods, but say you don't like Arabs or dislike inter-racial marriage and you get a fine? Yeah, that seems really consistent and fair.

In most of the Europe there are hate laws. Simply writing things discrimating a group of people is illegal. Judges are just following the law. I do not see which part of it you do not understand. I believe you are all against racism or anti-semitism. For you is it okey to discrimate homo-sexuals and muslims. Don't you think that is a little hypocracy. IMO, discrimination is discrimination.

"What I don't get is that a French author can write that 9/11 was staged by big oil and most Americans are worthless clods, but say you don't like Arabs or dislike inter-racial marriage and you get a fine? Yeah, that seems really consistent and fair" It's really very simple: There are several (leftist) "anti racism" organisations with lots of money. When there is somebody who says something they don't like a lawsuit is startes which will be fought all the way to the highest courts even when these organisations KNOW that they're not going to win. So if the average guy says something on TV these organisations don't like, he is immediately faced by a series of expensive legal suits for at least several years while being demonised in the press. This would destroy the average guy financially, his standing in society, his health due to stress and maybe even his job. In short an average guy would be effectively destroyed by this. Which means that leftist "anti racism" organisations have effectively censored TV, because people will think twice about voicing their opinion when it carries the risk of having to spend the next 6 years waging several expensive court cases. And that only rich guys, because they have the connections and money to fight these lawsuits are openly critical of Muslims. Which is exactly what you see in Europe. Shutting up the average worker how socialist is that?

“She should move to America. Yeah, we've got "fairground freaks" and "sheep-murdering barbarians" too, but it's not illegal to say so.” I like the idea, every bastard should move to America. I want to see most of eggs in one basket.

"In most of the Europe there are hate laws. Simply writing things discrimating a group of people is illegal. Judges are just following the law. I do not see which part of it you do not understand. I believe you are all against racism or anti-semitism. For you is it okey to discrimate homo-sexuals and muslims. Don't you think that is a little hypocracy. IMO, discrimination is discrimination." You don't understand because you don't live in America. Because you don't live in America, you think we are talking about one thing but actually we are talking about something else. I'm afraid you'd have to grow up here to understand. In America, even if we very much disagree with (for example) the KKK or some other famous hate group, we wouldn't want to pass laws to 'shut them up'. So long as they don't incite violence, we believe that they are entitled to thier opinion - however misguided and foolish it may be. We are not advocating discrimenation. We do not thing it is OK to discrimenate against homosexuals or muslims or anyone else. What we think is hypocracy is to claim you are against discrimination and then make it illegal merely to criticize someone. Bardot's comments may have been tasteless and discrimenatory, but that doesn't mean that she should be forced to shut up. If her comments are valueless, then simply don't read her book. According to her conviction, "Mme. Bardot presents Muslims as barbaric and cruel invaders, responsible for terrorist acts and eager to dominate the French to the extent of wanting to exterminate them." Now, nowhere in that conviction does the judge indicate that Mme. Bardot is actually advocating exterminating Muslims, and frankly, while Mme. Bardot might be guilty of mischaracterizing all Muslims in her country there are quite a few Muslims in france that actually fit her characterization. There are actually Muslims in France that advocate exterminating the population. If I point this out, am I guilty of discrimination? The fear being expressed on this board is that the French law is enabling hatred and not repressing it. The fear is that such laws only are being applied unilaterally. French Algerians immigrants write rap songs about murdering Jews and Gallic Frenchmen, and these albums win awards from the French academy of the arts. But dare write that in fact there are a large number of Muslim immigrants in France who are filled with hatred for all things French, and you'll be in court paying fines. Americans consider this repression of thought, and see in it discriminatory practices that are far more dangerous than the thoughts that they are trying to repress. In my opinion, Bardot's rants are so much the epitome of reactionary racism, that the best thing you could do if you wanted to discredit anyone critical of Muslim immigrants is let her keep ranting. She is so distasteful that she prejudices anyone that listens to her against anyone however reasonable they might be that might point out that in fact a good portion of the immigrant population is in fact acting like invaders. In short, in America if you want to hate someone, you are quite free to do it. If you want to be wrong, you are free to do that too. And you are free to share your wrong opinions however you like. You cross the line only if you act on your hatred.

Very true Ilpars, but we see it as having contracted the PC virus. i.e. Politically correct to allow discrimination against some groups and a down right moral failing that condemns you to seven types of hell for being mean to others..
