Subject: Are we going to lose Spain?
Final Historian    3/13/2004 2:16:24 PM
The elections in Spain are tomorrow, and the fate of US-Spanish cooperation will be determined by the election. Will the opposition Socialist party win in Spain? Already there are lots of protestors blaming Aznar and his Popular Party for the attack, saying that his support of the US led AQ to attack Spain. At the same time he is accused of withholding evidence. Will his rush to blame ETA be his party's undoing? Especially now that Islamic terrorists are almost certainly involved.

I think you are alarmistic in great EXCESS Romani. That will not happen here. we have been hit, and no matter wich vulture tries to get benefits from this situation, or who wins the elections today, we will have to realize that someone will make war to us whether we want it or not. And once this is acknowledged, whoever is in charge will have to take action. Historically, we tend to be stubborn and we don't surrender easily. So lets face it. Dont despair.

I'm being alarmist? I sure hope so! But remember what happened when Morocco invaded Perejil Island to test our resolve. Most of Spanish society was scared less about it. Anyway... when people start thinking about the unthinkable, making studies about the consequences of seccession of the Basque country and all that, and agonize wether to apply the law or not, it doesn't inspire any confidence. Democracy in Spain is much more imperfect and fragile that we like to admit.

Looks like th US loses an ally and the Basques get started on Automonous Rule. IF only JuanCarlos were not so old now. Which means the next attack will be on Italy or Australia likely. After that I am betting on game over for bin Laden. Well anyway the sheep have spoken. Baa!

It does indeed look like the US is going to lose Spain as an ally. Australia is firmly on the US side. Italy is next, than the UK. BTW, who is the heir to the Spanish throne?

I hope this newly elected government does not make the mistake of leaving an alliance because the enemy attacks. They will have to realize that we are already targets and withdrawal means that the terror wins. Let's wait and see.

"Interesting, as Debka, a source with dubious accuracy, but has been right in the past, says that the Vatican, or at least Italy, is next on the hit list. " What would be the affect if AQ used a dirty bomb on the Vatican? The place has no religious importance to AQ and it would help the idea that this is a war of religions. When it is a war of culture vs. religion.

If the Vatican would attack, it would galvanize Catholics around the world, especially in Poland. JP is their national hero and I think it would bother the Poles immensely. It might also have a lesser effect on heavily Catholic nations--Germany, Brazil, possibly even Ireland. The Vatican is a world treasure, whether you're Christian or not, and irradiating it would, I think, herald a real backlash--and there's no guarantee it wouldn't be against Mecca. And then it's a real war of religions, with apocalyptic proportions. I glad there are people like Romani in Spain. Right now I would like to thank the Socialist government for pulling the biggest backstab in international politics since the French yanked the rug out from under the Israelis and we let the South Vietnamese die. If I was a Spaniard, I would be ashamed--a country that once produced El Cid has come to running scared after a bomb attack. Yes, it was terrible, and my sympathies are with those who lost loved ones. But I imagine more Spaniards are killed in auto accidents every year. If Spain's new government thinks it's no longer a target because it caved in, I suggest a thorough review of French history after Munich. You give a mouse a cookie, and the bastard will want milk.

A pullout from Spain may give the anti-war elements in the electorate what they want, but it also gives AQ what they want- less peacekeepers=more instability=easier AQ takeover. Hizbollah blew away 241 US Marines and 58 French paras in 1983, their withdrawal has been used REPEATEDLY by AQ as a showcase of western weakness. Guess what, now it's the Socialists govt's turn to repeat history. Even though they deny the withdrawal from Iraq as a 'compliance' with AQ, the AQ punks will STILL intepret mass murder as a viable election changer for softer administrations.

Spain's contribution in Iraq was pretty low, so that loss is no big deal. But Trigga is right in that this is asking for more instability. If I was a Japanese, Slovakian, Italian, or any other nationality besides American or British, I'd be making sure I had plenty of obstacles up for car bombs, because they're next. I wouldn't be surprised to see AQ go after Japan, at that. We'd also better be looking close ourselves. Who's willing to bet that AQ will be looking to destroy something big either at home or in Iraq to influence the November elections?
