Subject: Who in Europe is next Italy France UK Poland?
Siddar    3/15/2004 1:52:47 AM
Italy has tendency for weak goverments so a attack could produce the response terrorists want. Poland seems to be easy target but Poles would likely unite against the terrorist Poles are tired of being pushed around by people and I see them standing up not backing down if there attacked. UK Like Poland not ones to back down in face of a threat. France wildcard france thinks it is safe from attack because of its opposing US on Iraq but many factors could lead to it being attacked. 1 Suport for war in Afghanistan that destroyed the only goverment that Jihadists beleaved was worth suporting. 2 Has asked that EU take over running Nato mission in Afghanistan thus putting EU in charge of one of the main fronts in WoT. 3 Headscarf ban this action has put France at the head of the Culture clash between western and muslim world. 4 Chiracs triumphant turn of Mid East before GW2 the fact that a secular head of a western power could be seen as a hero in muslim world is agianst every thing that the AQ type beleave in. 5 large base of muslims in France to hide in this would give them a base for sustained attacks not just one large attacks that they are limited to in other countrys. In my view the Italy is logical target followed by France. The only reason france is second is because the terrorist draw certian benifits from europes view that there not targets. My guess is if violence in Iraq burns out and Osama is captured that terrorist will become desprate will attack any where they can.

FJV    Update on possible Dutch reaction to a terror attack.   3/16/2004 1:17:02 PM
One of the leading PVDA (leftwing party) members made a statement in favor of withdrawing the Dutch in Iraq. Roughly translated he said "It has been enough already with the Dutch presence in Iraq" (Shows why I'ld rather throw leftists out of the country than Muslims) Immediately this person was accused of yielding to terrorism (rightly so) by the VVD, CDA, (rightwing) and D66 (?) political parties. One VVD partymember accused him of having "an incredibly arrogant and hypocritical attitude". Related news is that Bush has not asked Balkenende (our Prime minister) directly for a continuation of the Dutch mission in Iraq. Balkenende was also not allowed by the parliament to offer Bush any concrete guarantees. Though a majority of our parliament has no problem with a military preparation for a possible continuation. (I kid you not that how its formulated) Fears are that if the Dutch prematurely say yes other nations will refuse US demands passing the buck to the Dutch who already said yes. Creating a situation where no-one is willing to replace the Dutch when scheduled to end their presence in Iraq. Something similar happened in Srebrenica where other UN peacekeeping nations scheduled to replace/relieve the Dutch refused. We all know how that ended. Naturally we are very anxious to avoid a repeat of such an event. Shows how divided the Dutch are considering the war on terror.

Then if I were you, FJV, I'd avoid train stations for the next few months...

Actually, many European nations already have many of the provisions of Patriot. Fly a swastika in Germany sometime and watch what happens, or openly preach armed rebellion in France. At the very least you're going in for a hard questioning session. I imagine things have changed since I lived in Germany, but I remember watching the Polizei cut down a Baader-Meinhof Gang member in cold blood on German TV. I have no problem with that: the bitch deserved it. The problem with Patriot is that many people in Europe have never bothered to read it or even look into it other than by reading leftist articles. Their overriding fear of a Bush-led police state, which is about as possible as me taking over Microsoft, colors their views. Sadly, I think if Clinton had come up with it, they would be all for it. Their fanatical hatred of anything proposed by Bush keeps them from seeing it in a different light. I have read Patriot, and there are a few things in it where I can see the possibility for abuse. I would support a revamping of it, but on the whole, it is a sensible document and response to 9/11. We didn't simply round up all citizens of Muslim descent and put them in internment camps--something that was done in WWII with very little protest from the American people at the time. "Bush's silly dreams"...yeah, killing OBL, wiping out AQ, and knocking Saddam out. Silly Americans, wanting to do something good for other people.

The "Palestinian" problem didn't start 60 some odd years ago. More like 82 years ago. ARTIFICIAL BORDERS, CL.

Couldn't help laughing. Go to work every day with the train. From the biggest train station in the country Utrecht (Utrecht lies central in the country) towards Duivendrecht via which our main airport Schiphol is connected to Amsterdam our capital city during rush hour. Never thought commuting by train would end up as a dangerous sport. Don't really think about it, I've got to live threat or no threat. Oh and all this after our Prime minister appeared with this photo in the newspaper. http://www.whitehouse.gov/news/releases/2004/03/images/20040316-2_p38682-17-515h.html Do you think that will p#ss them off? On the plus side. Our trains are very often but randomly 5 to 10 minutes delayed. Even if Al Queda would time their attack perfectly a train delay could screw everything up. "Dutch railways maintaining security by being crap"

Elbandeedo    RE:Who in Europe is next? Media rushes to proclaim...   3/17/2004 12:45:24 PM
Every country in Europe (ok, nearly every country!)has so far had some reprasentative from the police/military/government saying how they were SURE they were next on the list. The media is of course hyping this beyond all belief. My first thought is, "why live in fear? Nuke them." then I remember we don't live in a world where people are yet willing to take drastic measures to end the insanity that is international terror. It appears further that most of Europe is in a state of denial, and they are so busy pointing the finger at the U.S. for "stirring up the hornets nest" that they can't see the truth of it: we are ALL targets, and will ALWAYS be targets, as long as terrorism WORKs. and it does work. Whether or not it actually DID cause the Spanish people to vote for the 'wrong' party, whether or not we ran from Beirut, Somalia, etc - The REAL reason doesn't matter. the jihadis see us leave, they declare victory, and they have a new recruiting slogan. THEY think they won - no matter what the truth of it is. E.

The President commands the military, the Congress commands the purse strings.

I'd add two countries to the list: Portugal and Greece. Both are hosting this summer important sports events (Portugal is hosting the European Football Cup, Greece the Summer Olympics Games). The worldwide media coverage of these events makes them a tempting target for terror atacks.

And, Greece, especially, has a wretched reputation for preventing terrorism and fighting terrorism.

i agree that greece could be a concrete target, not for political reason, but for media coverage reason. But i think they will make every effort necessary to protect the event
