Subject: Gotta Love the British style of pointed Understatement
swhitebull    3/30/2004 7:26:10 AM
Without saying directly who these guys are, the British say it all in one little paragraph in the center of this article. Identity of the plotters also mentioned in Debka, as a confirmation: http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/4629706/ swhitebull - go Brits!!

Yeah, the New York Times has adopted the same style: "Authorities declined to discuss the religious affiliations of Husayn, Mohamed, Achmed, and Ali..." .

Grrrr... I'm not so sure it's the typical British knack for understatement, as it is a way of making a feeble attempt at P.C. After all, mustn't be saying, "Look! The "religion of peace" is trying to murder yet more infidels!" E.

We have the same problems with political correctness here in Oz. In the past couple of years, there have been quite a few incidents of gang rape by "young males of Middle-Eastern descent", with local Islamic leaders complaining loudly about the "racial stereotyping" in the reporting of these crimes. Did they ever think that it's much easier to avoid "racial stereotyping" if these crimes are not committed in the first place? Further on the subject, our leading Islamic cleric is under close scrutiny at the moment for reportedly gushing praise for the murder of Israelis during a sermon he delivered during a recent visit to Lebanon. That kind of doesn't help much if you're trying to paint Islam as the "religion of peace"..

Ever check out ? It's a translation service that translates into English writings, speeches, sermons from the Arab and the Islamic world. Can't say they are at allneutral - they do have an agenda, and mostly it is to make the West aware of what goes on that most Westerners (Ozzie included, of course!!) would never be exposed to. I pass on choice tidbits to my relatives at NBC News here in the Colonies, since the one at NBC is a senior manager at the Network, and works closely with the reporting of the News reporters. swhitebull

Elbandeedo, don't mention cricket!!! We'll have to listen to the Brits and Aussies go on and on and on about that boring game! Been having that battle on another board.

Gotta agree with you there AR. I lived in England for 4 years, played rugby (now THERE is a sport!), drank pints - but watching cricket... holy schmoly!!! Like watching paint dry. Here is some logic that I've not quite figured out - don't get me wrong, I'm an Anglophile if there ever was one, but sometimes our English cousins just don't make sense: Rugby season starts "around" August and lasts until April or May (can't recall exactly now! Musta clipped my head once too often!) ;-) For Rugby you wear a long sleeve shirt (no problems so far) and shorts. Shorts. all winter long. in a fairly cold country! DOH! Ok, Cricket season (I can only get very general here) lasts through the summer. they wear long pants and sweaters... !?!?!?! huh!? Oh well, it's not like they are moving much in Cricket. ;-) E.

Well I used to play Rugby when I went to school in Canberra and it's pretty cold there. The reasoning for shorts as far as I can recall is that once you start running around, you don't notice the cold and your legs are less restricted than if you wear long pants. As to cricket, it's very much an acquired taste, cricket is a sport that I grew to love gradually. If you are interested in gaining an appreciation of the game, you're probably best off starting with one day games and not watching the whole game. Do something else and just have the game on as 'background noise', only focus on what's happening when the crowd goes off and they show a replay of a dismissal or a massive six. Pretty soon you'll get tired of watching replays and will pay more attention so that you see it live, you'll also start to pick up on the tactics and will notice that your concentration span generally is much improved..
