Subject: Time for a Change??!!

The UN has obviously been more successful than the League of Nations created at the end of the WWI. This is highlighted by the mere fact that the UN is now alive for 59 years. But still, the UN has failed to maintain peace in many international situations and a lot of times, the UN can't pass a resolution just because one of the permanent members have vetoed the resolution. (Note: I am not making reference to any particular permanent member but to all permanent members in general.) Do you think that it is about time that the veto power is taken away from the permanent members and it is replaced with something more practical like a super majority of say 66% or 75% or any other ratio of members. Do you think the UN will survive without the superpowers having their veto right?

" Sure, once the US pulls out of the UN.

Why would any SuperPower surrender its power to the U.N. ? The veto is a requirement to even get the SuperPowers to participate. It may seem unfair, but look around you anywhere. Parties with more power don't want to give up their power to parties with lesser power, no matter how unfair it may seem. Even if the U.N. wasn't riddled with corruption, and composed of a large majority of governments with their own corrupt interests, it still wouldn't be a good idea. If the minor powers of the world are unhappy with the U.N., they should form their own international organization (as some have) and see how successful it will be. Maybe they can recruit some idealistic young Americans to help them administer it.
