The Air Force has begun serious moves to arm fighters with lasers for air-to-air battles. The USAF Research Laboratory is to provide expertise in high-energy lasers in a cooperative program with Lockheed Martin, which will try to integrate the weapon into a fighter. The Air Force wants to arm the new F-35 and F-22, but may also consider arming the F-15 and F-16 with lasers.--Stephen V Cole
