Infinite Wisdom

"We went to sleep on the laurels of Frederick the Great"

--Queen Louise of Prussia,
Explaining Napoleon’s
Defeat of her country,
1806

La Triviata

  • In 1910 King George V authorized the Royal Navy to give flying personnel a special monthly allowance, beginning at two shillings for able seamen and rising to six for officers, thus initiating the custom of "hazardous duty pay" for aviators.
  • Challenged by his knights when he suddenly dropped his sword and left the parapet during the Moslem siege of Acre in 1291, Guillaume de Beaujeu, 21st Grand Master of the Templars, replied, "I'm not running away, I'm dead; Here is the blow," and raised his arm to reveal a mortal wound, before falling over.
  • When former President Harry S Truman was interred at his library in Independence, on December 27, 1971, a 21 gun salute was fired by Battery D, 129th Field Artillery, of the Missouri National Guard, which he had commanded in action in 1918.
  • The Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve was formed in 1903 from yachtsmen, at least partially due to the publication of Erskine Childer's' novel The Riddle of the Sands (Dover Thrift Editions) , in which some amateur sailors out for a cruise discover a secret German plot to invade Britain.
  • Beginning in the eleventh century, the armies of Italian city-states all possessed a carroccio, a stoutly built, lavishly decorated wagon which bore an altar and the town banner, and served as a rallying point for the troops in the event of a reverse.
  • Allied D-Day deception measures were so effective that the Germans over-estimated the number of Allied divisions available in Britain by some 40 percent, concluding that there were 85-90 infantry and armored divisions on hand for the invasion, plus seven airborne ones, when the actual figures were 35 and four, and on a world-wide basis, overestimating the number of American divisions by 20 percent and British Empire ones by a remarkable 70 percent.
  • Preparing for his ultimately unsuccessful invasion of Korea in 1592, the Shogun Toyotomi Hideyoshi mustered nearly 170,000 troops, whom he supplied with 150,000 spears, pole arms, and war axes, 600,000 battle swords of various types, 300,000 arquebuses, and, perhaps most interestingly, 100,000 beheading swords.
  • In 1947, veterans accounted for 47 percent of all college enrollments in the United States, most attending as a result of the G.I. Bill.
  • Because Germany ordered mobilization on the evening of August 1, 1914, but Britain did not enter World War I until late on the 4th, for three days Londoners were "entertained" by the sight of German reservists crowding their railroad stations, bound for the Channel ferries to the Netherlands, so that they could return home and join their units, often rubbing shoulders with their soon-to-be French opponents, also headed home to join their units.
  • For the First Punic War (264-241 BC), Rome annually maintained at least four legions, and occasionally six, plus attached allied auxiliaries of approximately equal strength, for a total of 96 "legion years," the annual cost for which was over 2.8 million sestertii, covering all expenses except arms, armor, and cavalry horses, which soldiers had to provide for themselves, at a time when liability for military service was property ownership of at least 2,750 sestertii.
