As part of their 'roadmap to modernization', the Indian Navy has made a strong pitch for building a capable, properly trained and outfitted amphibious force with marine units. Along with increased naval strength and their airborne forces, this would give India an interesting "force projection" ability. Currently, Indian has a nominal force of about a thousand marines, and amphibious ships meant mainly for moving army troops.- Adam Geibel
