June 25, 2007: Australia has decided on which of the competing designs to use for its two new amphibious ships. The winner is the Spanish Navantia class LHD. This  is a 27,000 ton ship that is very similar to the U.S. San Antonio class LPD. The Navantia is 686 feet long, has a crew of about 140 and can carry up to a thousand troops, 150 vehicles, two landing craft and at least six helicopters. The Navantia's are twice the size of the two amphibious ships Australia is replacing, and has a ski-jump flight deck that will enable it to use vertical takeoff warplanes like the Harrier or F-35B. The Navantia's will cost about $1.2 billion each. Australia will receive the first of these LHDs, to be called the Canberra, in five years. The hulls will be built in Spain, then shipped  to Australia for the addition of the superstructure and installation of all other equipment.

NAVANTIA WELCOMES AUSTRALIA DECISIONS

Spanish ship designer and builder Navantia welcomes the selection of the F-100 design as the basis for Australia's next Air Warfare Destroyers and the Tenix/Navantia team as preferred tenderer to construct Amphibious Ships for the Royal Australian Navy.


We are proud to be selected by the Australian Government to provide the designs for the ships that will provide the RAN with the core of its next generation of combat capability, and to be given the opportunity to work with Australian industry to deliver those vessels.
The Australian Government and the RAN are recognised worldwide as demanding customers for naval equipment, and Navantia is very satisfied to have met their rigorous standards.
Navantia looks forward to working together with the AWD Alliance and Tenix on these two projects, as well as with governments at all levels throughout Australia.
Navantia extends its warmest thanks to all who assisted in the contract bid, particularly members of the AWD Alliance "Existing Design" Team and Tenix, the lead partners on our LHD bid.

COMPLEMENTARY INFORMATION

AWD'S
The F-100 frigates are designed according to US regulations and to US Navy Design Standards. The Spanish Navy's main requirement was to install a full Aegis Weapon System onboard a moderate displacement frigate class vessel. The process required careful cooperation with Lockheed Martin in both design development and production as the Aegis Combat System.
Navantia has also been contracted to build 5 F-310 frigates, complete with Aegis combat systems, for the Norwegian Navy.  It is believed that Navantia's facility at Ferrol is the only shipyard in the world that is building two frigate types simultaneously.

LHD's
Navantia formed an alliance with Tenix, to jointly bid for Project JP2048 and supplying Australia's next amphibious ships.
Tenix and Navantia also have a long association, beginning with Tenix's relationships with Navantia's predecessors, Bazán and Izar. Bazán first co-operated with Tenix on the Amphibious Watercraft Project.
Navantia's BPE (LHD) is a pre-existing design that already met the bulk of the design parameters set out by the Australian Government for an amphibious ship in JP 2048. The design did not have to increase in size to meet the ADF's operational requirements. This allows savings in reduced logistical and crewing requirements, as well as minimisiong design risk.
