The US Army is seeking new engines to replace the 1,500hp Textron-Lycoming AGT1500 turbines in the M1 tank fleet to improve performance and reduce costs. The two candidates are the EuroPowerPack MTU883 V12 diesel (1,500hp) and the LV100 turbine developed by Allied Signal.--Stephen V Cole

In a surprise move, the US Army is considering a plan to resurrect the Armored Gun System (XM8 Light Tank) to provide an armored complement for the new medium strike force. A short production run of XM8s could bridge the gap until the new Future Combat System (expected to weigh half as much as an M1A2) is available.--Stephen V Cole
