: Russia has provided refits to improve the 400 BMP-3 armored fighting vehicles used by the United Arab Emirates. The refit includes:

@ four tons of reactive armor covering 49% of the front and 85% of each side of the vehicle. This provides a 90% improvement in protection against shaped-charge weapons. The reactive armor also improves protection against conventional munitions. The improved vehicle cannot be penetrated by a 12.7mm machinegun from beyond 100m; the original BMP3 could be penetrated by this weapon inside 600m.

@ improved protection for the fuel tanks, preventing them from exploding if hit by a shaped-charge weapon.

@ splinter-proof liners for the fighting compartments to protect the crew.--Stephen V Cole
