Armor: January 30, 2002

Finland has ordered two prototype wheeled 8x8 Armored Modular Vehicles from Patria for extensive testing. These will mount different turrets, each with a 30mm chaingun. The AMV is a fairly boxy armored personnel carrier with a sloping glacis (front) and nearly vertical sides to provide maximum usable internal volume. The basic vehicle weighs 14 tons; this can reach a maximum of 24 tons with turret, gun, crew, weapons, and extra armor. The AMV is basically an expanded version of the very successful 6x6 XA series. The Finns plan to market AMV as a larger version of XA and to offer the usual range of variants (mortar, command, air defense, tank destroyer, ambulance, supply, maintenance, engineer, etc.).--Stephen V Cole
