China Puts New Tanks On The Indian Border
Next Article → SUPPORT: Stealthy American Air Power Over Libya
July 8, 2011: Bangladesh has bought 44 MBT-2000 tanks, plus three recovery vehicles, from China, for about $5 million each. This is a major upgrade, as Bangladesh currently has a force of some 500 heavy tanks, about 60 percent of them the Chinese Type 59 (a copy of the Russian T-54), with the rest being Type 69 (copies of the Russian T-55). Both are 1950s technology, with some upgrades. The MBT 2000 is an export version of the Chinese Type 98/99, although they also look similar to the Type 90/Al Khalid (a Type 90 variant developed by China and Pakistan for Pakistani service).

The most modern tanks China has are the Type 98 and 99, which come close to matching early models of the U.S. M-1. Compared to the Type 98/99, the MBT-2000 is a 14 percent lighter (at 49 tons) tank. It has a three man crew and an auto-loader for its 125mm gun. There is a 7.62 coaxial machine-gun and a 12.7mm machine-gun on top of the turret. The 1200 horsepower engine moves the vehicle at road speeds of up to 70 kilometers an hour. Range on the road is 450 kilometers. Armor is a combination of composite and ERA (explosive reactive armor). The MBT-2000 lacks the most modern ERA and some of the electronics found on the latest Chinese models (98 and 99).

The Type 98/99/90/MBT-2000 vehicles are all "improved T-72s." Lots of improvements, though, many of them similar to what's found in the Russian T-80UM2. The workmanship on these vehicles is a little better than on the T-80UM2, but the Chinese don't have as much experience building tanks. This has shown itself in the numerous technical glitches that have shown up. The basic T-72 design has been around for over 30 years and has proved reliable, although not particularly effective on the battlefield. That was mostly due to poor crews. The Chinese moved to volunteer crews and more intensive training, which makes any tank more effective.

Here's another Market the US is just letting slip thru it's fingers...Older not so expensive Tanks for the Not ready for Prime Time player counties.

How many old M-60 tanks are parked in storage just waiting to be given away as (Military Aid) to some lame country that will just stab us in the back in some future date...How about, sending these old hulks out for a "special" referb, update/replace the Engine and tranny with something with a lot more power, and that Turrent, make it a somewhat simalar but not quite replacement type like the M-1 has, modernize the Gun up to a 120mm, some 2nd generation Gun stabilzation gear and auto loader, sighting systems and a few other gadgets and sell these babies off as a competion to China and Russia. Keep the price range competitive with the Chinese and Russian models but offer a better logistics/ support package.
Hell, the DoD Budget is about to take a hit, time to clean out the Garages and make some money on some of this old stuff we got collecting dust.

The M-60 2000 by General Dynamics (I tried to copy and past but for some reason it wouldn't past)

Anyways..basically what I described has already been designed and built (in Kit form for upgrades to counties already using M-60 tanks like Turkey and Eygpt)..120mm smoothbore main gun, M-1 like turrent with bells and whistles, 1200Hp Diesel engine, and M-1 type suspension systems...already formulated, and in a production mode. And less than half the price of a M-1 tank.

I tried to find out how many M-60's are still in US Inventory, but couldn't find a real answer, though Wikipedia mentioned over 15,000 were built over all during it's life time, And Turkey has 7000 and Eygpt has 6000. Leaving around 2000 or less in the US supply system.

But we could make a deal with Turkey and Eygpt...sell them older M-1's with a "trade in of 2 or 3 M-60's per M-1 upgrade, keeping Eygpt and Turkey as a US Customer) converting the traded in M-60's into M-60 2000 and selling them in new markets in competion with Russia and China. It's all about Customer base in the long run...

I agree, the US could dominate this market if it applied its ingenuity along with its technical edge.

However the US has a long history of expensive projects and high-end weapons sales, just look at the space program costs compared to the Russian one. This would be a good exercise in competing with future China, when the US for the first time in its history loses the economic supremacy it has attained and held for over a century.
