Artillery: Son of FROG Gets Sharp Eyes

Archives

February 11, 2008: Iran has provided Syria with strap-on intertial guidance systems for the Zelzal 2 missiles it provided earlier. The Zelzal 2 is an Iranian version of the 40 year old Russian FROG missile. This was a large, unguided, rocket, with a range of about 65 kilometers. The rocket spun rapidly after launch, stabilizing its trajectory, and enabling it to land within about 800 meters of its aim point. The new Iranian guidance kit, enables the Zelzal 2 (which has a range of 250 kilometers) to land within a hundred meters of its target. The Zelzal 2 weighs 3.5 tons, has a half ton warhead and can hit most major cities in Israel, when fired from Syria (who have chemical warheads for these missiles).
