Artillery: May 2, 2000

Chile has successfully test-fired its new RAYO rocket artillery system. Based on a German MAN SX 2000 6x6 truck, the RAYO system mounts two pods, each with six 160mm rockets. During the recent test firings, the rockets reached 52km, beyond the 45km required by the contract. Chile is expected to buy a few of the systems for its own use, but is mostly interested in pursuing export. Several nations have expressed interest, and even Russia is so impressed it is considering a small order for trials. --Stephen V Cole
