For nearly half a century, the U.S. Army military academy at West Point has created atlases of military operations. Some were eventually published, but now many of those maps are now available online at http://www.dean.usma.edu/history/dhistorymaps/MapsHome.htm. An excellent reference for anyone (military or civilian) interested in military affairs. Your tax dollars in action, very effectively.
