A few months ago, the Navy retired its ES-3 communications intelligence aircraft to save money, saying that surface ships could do the job just as well. Now it has discovered that the ships cannot in fact do the job, and the Navy is frantically trying to build three prototype pods that tactical aircraft could carry to intercept enemy communications.--Stephen V Cole
