Russia launched a new missile early warning satellite (Cosmos 2379) from Baikonur on 24 August. This gives Russia a missile warning capability for the first time since its Cosmos-2224 satellite retired in May 99. The launch used a four-stage Proton-K booster. --Stephen V Cole
