The US Ballistic Missile Defense Organization has awarded a $127 million contract to a team including Lockheed-Martin, Boeing, and TRW to work on a prototype Space Based Laser Integrated Flight Experiment. This is the first step toward deploying an orbital laser system by 2020.--Stephen V Cole
