The Russian air force is forming an airmobile mountain infantry brigade. The unit is meant for operations in Chechnya, where such specialized units have proved most effective in finding and destroying rebel camps in mountainous southern Chechnya. The unit will be staffed with volunteers, and get the most modern infantry weapons and equipment available to the Russians. But the unit will also be trained to use pack animals, as there are many areas in southern Chechnya where vehicles cannot operate. As is common with many nations, the air force controls some, or all, of the airborne and air mobile troops.
