Bullet Proof Batteries

March 3, 2009: A defense contractor has come up with a clever idea for solving the growing problem of infantry having to haul around so many heavy batteries. While the ultimate solution to these growing battlefield electricity needs is fuel cells, an interim solution is a modified E-SAPI ballistic plate with a 10mm thick lithium ion battery fitted onto it as an additional layer. The bulletproof plate is normally 25x30cm (10x12 inches) and 2.5cm (an inch) thick. Actually, there are four of these flat batteries on each plate. A special vest contains attachments for the various equipment batteries you need to recharge, or a direct connection to some equipment. The E-SAPI plates normally weigh about five pounds each, but the addition of the battery panels adds another pound or so. Overall, the soldier carries about ten percent less weight in batteries, and does so a lot more comfortably. Or so goes the sales pitch. More will be known once many of these get out into the combat zone and used a lot. The powered plates will be available for sale by the end of the year (from BAE), and two of them are supposed to supply enough juice for a typical 72 hour mission.

I thought most of the available lithium cell chemistry approaches were relatively ignitable in the presence of impact-compression and atmospheric oxygen, and have a rather substantial chemical-energy release potential?

How functional would it be to wrap a soldier in armor that sets him on fire in case of bullet strikes?

I must be wrong on this...no one would be that stupid, right?

We've had reactive armor in the inventory for some time now!!

An acoustic sensor array for counterbattery target acquisition?

You're probably right

However if someone would claim these are devices for amplifying farts I would find that plausible as well.

PS
Should a artillery shell land close you would be deaf in an instant I supposed. It's probably better used for acoustic detection/direction finding of aircraft in my opinion. All those deaf soldiers are really bad at following orders.

I'd guess acoustic sensor for detecting approaching airplanes, rather than artillery.

That's right, a bearing only noise source detector.

Effective range was?

It let you know something was coming, but not the range, altitude, or WHAT.it was or when it would reach you..

How effective was it? Well it told the direction you should face.and gave you jist enough time to do so; when you needed to bend over and kiss yourself goodbye.

OK?   When your recharging the batteries, what plates do you wear???????

And...   Those batteries get hot, who is the dummy who came up the idea?   Did he ever wear body armor with plates in the desert, it is already bad enought without adding an additional heat source inside the armor with you.

Someone please kill the good idea fairy before he gives us all heat stroke.
