The US Air Force may be on the verge of winning its pilot retention battle. New bonuses ($25,000 for each year of re-enlistment) and shorter overseas deployments are keeping more pilots in uniform. The Air Force had expected to be 1200 pilots short in FY01, but now calculates this deficit will be no more than 600.--Stephen V Cole
