The U.S. Army's new "how to fight" manual (FM-3, it used to be FM 100-5) has added several new items to reflect the ground forces new role in a post Cold War world. These include; 

@ Shaping the security environment with "boots on the ground."
@ Responding promptly to crises.

@ Forcible entry operations.

@ Supporting civilian authorities.
