July 2,
2008: South Korea is buying more
missiles and smart bombs for its growing fleet of F-15K fighter-bombers. The
latest order, coming to about $200 million, includes 125 AMRAAM air-to-air
missiles, 35 Maverick air-to-ground missiles, 280 JDAM guidance kits (added to
dumb bombs, to turn them into smart bombs), 36 laser guided bombs, plus spare
parts and chaff containers (each of which shows up on enemy radar as a 700
meter diameter blob, and hides incoming aircraft.)
South Korea
already has received 40 F-15Ks (similar to the USAF F-15E, a two seat,
all-weather bomber), with another 21 to arrive between 2010-12. These aircraft
are expected to do most of the damage to North Korea ground forces, should
there ever be another invasion by North Korea.
