Procurement: Iraq Armor Reset and Upgraded

Archives

December1, 2006: With hundreds of armored vehicles coming back from Iraq in need of extensive repairs (mostly for worn out components), the U.S. Army has decided to combine this refurbishment ( "reset") process with upgrades. Some 500 M2 Bradley Infantry Fighting Vehicles will be refurbished, and upgraded, at a cost of about $2 million each. Just a refurb costs about $700,000. The additional cost results from the installation of better armor, electronics and sensors. This upgrade program will take three years to complete. The older M2 vehicles originally cost about $2.2 million each when brand new.
