April 7, 2006:
The U.S. Navy has established a training center, for submarine based counter-terrorism operations, in Groton Connecticut. There are a lot of things subs can do to support counter-terrorist activities. Submarines are used to track seaborne terrorist operations (without the terrorists knowing they are being tracked), tap into underwater fiber optic communications systems of nations that support terrorism, and deliver counter-terrorist forces (when surprise is essential, and the target is near the coast.) U.S. nuclear submarines have been carrying out these missions for decades, but mainly in support of conventional warfare situations. Counter-terrorist versions of these operations are somewhat different, and the new training center will prepare submariners to handle these specialized tasks.
