Norway has signed a contract to buy a new 6,300-ton icebreaker for its Coast Guard. The Svalbard will be 103m long, and will be able to travel 10,000 nautical miles at 13 knots. It will be able to break through ice 1m thick (Polar Class 10) and tow ships up to 100,000 tons. --Stephen V Cole
