August 18,2008:
The 2,000 Georgian troops in Iraq
were hastily (within a week) flown home after the Russians invaded on August 8th.
U.S. and Iraqi troops had to quickly take over the checkpoints and patrols that
the Georgians had handled. The Georgians occupied a sector along the Iranian
border, and were heavily involved in stopping Iranian weapons from being
smuggled into the country.
