The US has asked the UN to consider economic sanctions against Afghanistan because that nation continues to harbor terrorist organizer Osama Bin Laden. In particular, the US wants the Afghan national airline denied access to UN member airports. Such an air travel sanction eventually brought Libya to heel. The Taliban rulers of Afghanistan condemned the US request. Meanwhile, the Northern Alliance (formerly the Northern Alliance) said that they had repulsed a Taliban attack on the northern province of Takhar.

September 30, 1999, 1999; Fighting has stopped after six days of intense combat in the northern province of Takhar. It is still unclear if the Taliban offensive made any progress against the Northern Alliance (formerly the Northern Alliance).
