In the last week, clashes with the Taliban in southern Afghanistan have left about a hundred people dead. Several hundred Taliban have driven in from Pakistan in trucks and are operating in Uruzgan province (north of Kandahar). This is the heartland of the Taliban tribes, and government troops have recaptured three villages that the Taliban briefly held. At least half a dozen Taliban have been captured.
