A combination of Afghan irregulars, units of the new Afghan army and the 9,000 American troops continue to run combat patrols in areas of suspected Taliban activity. The combination of Afghan troops, who know their way around the hills, and American troops, who are well trained and equipped, has made it difficult for groups of Taliban to survive inside of Afghanistan. At the local level, small groups of Taliban carry on terror campaigns to force the closure of schools for girls, the employment of women outside the home and anything else that contradicts real, or perceived, ancient tribal tradition. These local thugs are usually confronted by local opposition. These local conflicts are taking place throughout southern Afghanistan.

Outside Kandahar, an army convoy was ambushed and five soldiers killed.

The Loya Jirga (great assembly of leaders) has been delayed for two months until December. This meeting will approve, or disapprove, a new constitution and set dates for elections.
