The new Afghan National Army has 21,000 soldiers. This includes 17,800 trained troops, with some 3,400 still in training. About 4,000 Afghan troops are in action around  the country performing combat and security jobs. The rest are in their garrisons, where they continue training, and provide security locally. This often involves dealing with restless warlords, or bandits.
