Afghanistan: February 3, 2005

Disarmament efforts have been surprisingly successful. Warlords have been willing, if not always eager, to hand over a lot of heavy weapons and munitions. Local villagers have been willing to point out (or just whisper) the location of weapons and munitions hidden in the thousands of caves found throughout the country. A particularly useful find was several caches of landmines in western Afghanistan. Some 19,179 landmines were found, brought together and destroyed by explosives. A lot of the old weapons and munitions were given up by warlords after they were convinced that the 1970s and 80s era weapons were broken down and unreliable, and the old munitions downright dangerous to use because of old age.
